Sunday, May 17, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has once again urged political stakeholders in Somalia to intensify dialogue in order to reach a lasting political agreement and resolve ongoing disputes.
IGAD expressed concern over the current political tensions in Somalia, particularly the failure of recent talks, including the Xalane meeting, which did not produce a comprehensive agreement among key political actors. The organization warned that continued disagreements could undermine state-building efforts, national stability, and democratic progress in the country.
Concerns over political deadlock
In its statement, IGAD highlighted that repeated political disagreements are hindering efforts to strengthen government institutions and ensure security across Somalia. The organization called on the Federal Government, federal member states, and all political stakeholders to show compromise, cooperation, and national responsibility.
Call for continued dialogue
IGAD stressed the importance of ongoing consultations and political negotiations to achieve a sustainable resolution to the existing disputes.
“Somali parties must continue their discussions to resolve outstanding issues and reach an inclusive agreement,” the statement read.
IGAD’s continued support
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development reaffirmed its support for all Somali-led peace and security initiatives. It emphasized that lasting solutions can only be achieved through dialogue and mutual understanding among Somali stakeholders.
Appeal to the international community
IGAD also called on the international community to continue supporting Somalia, particularly in the areas of reconciliation, security, and state-building efforts.
The statement comes at a time when renewed political consultations are expected, with hopes that future talks will result in a breakthrough agreement that promotes stability, unity, and long-term development in Somalia.
