Friday, May 29, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -A group of Somali lawmakers has condemned the continued detention of Sacdiya Macalin, popularly known as Sacdiyo Bajaaj, calling for her immediate release or a prompt court appearance.
In a statement issued in Mogadishu on Thursday, members identifying themselves as the Independent Federal Parliament said Ms Bajaaj had been held at Mogadishu Central Prison for nearly two months without due legal process.
Reports surrounding her arrest indicate that Sacdiyo Bajaaj was detained over comments and videos she shared on social media, which sparked widespread public debate. However, authorities have not publicly announced formal charges or specific legal provisions under which she is being held.
The lawmakers said her detention violated constitutional rights, including the right to a fair hearing and legal representation.
They accused security agencies of keeping her in custody without formally presenting charges before a competent court.
The statement described Ms Bajaaj as a mother and family provider, saying her imprisonment had negatively affected her children and relatives.
The MPs also raised concerns about freedom of expression and the protection of civil liberties in Somalia, warning that such arrests could create fear among citizens expressing opinions on social media platforms.
They urged President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the Federal Government to ensure constitutional safeguards are respected and that Ms Bajaaj is either released immediately or brought before court without further delay.
The statement was issued on 29 May 2026 under reference number B456/BXJFS/0031.
