HARGEISA , Somaliland — September 3, 2026 — Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, known as Cirro, departed for the United States on Thursday via the United Arab Emirates, opening a diplomatic visit intended to strengthen foreign relations and advance Somaliland’s campaign for international recognition ahead of this month’s United Nations meetings in New York.
Somaliland’s presidency said the visit would focus on diplomatic engagement, security and economic cooperation, investment and recognition, according to local media reports carrying its announcement. It is Cirro’s first visit to the United States since taking office.

Planned Meetings and UN Timing

UAE Links and Berbera Trade
Cirro’s passage through the UAE comes amid established economic ties between Somaliland and the Gulf country. DP World has developed Berbera port and, alongside Somaliland’s government, inaugurated the Berbera Economic Zone in 2023 to attract investment and support trade.
The company also operates shipping connections between Berbera and the UAE. According to DP World, these services support cargo movements between Gulf markets and the Horn of Africa, with onward connections to inland destinations including Ethiopia.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has maintained its own governing institutions. Despite its diplomatic gains, it still lacks broad international recognition.
The visit brings Somaliland’s recognition campaign directly to American political audiences following its diplomatic breakthrough with Israel. Its immediate significance rests on the meetings Cirro secures and any public commitments that follow.
