Sunday, May 17, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -Security forces were heavily deployed across key parts of Mogadishu on Sunday, prompting concern and speculation among residents over the reason behind the unusually large operation.

Witnesses reported that large numbers of armed personnel were stationed along the areas stretching from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters near Zoobe junction to the Cabdullaahi Ciise/Cabdiqasim road. The forces reportedly included members of the Waran unit, regular NISA officers, Military Police, and other military units.

Residents said the security personnel were conducting searches on civilians and vehicles while operating with military trucks and extensive security equipment. The scale of the deployment drew public attention, with many describing it as uncommon even for the heavily secured Somali capital.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement explaining the operation or clarifying whether the deployment is linked to intelligence warnings about possible attacks by Al-Shabaab or concerns over political opposition activities.

The heightened security presence sparked widespread discussion among local residents, many of whom questioned whether there was an undisclosed security threat or ongoing political tension behind the move.

Mogadishu has frequently experienced tightened security measures in response to militant threats, political events, and intelligence alerts. The Somali government has repeatedly stated that it remains committed to strengthening security operations across the capital to prevent attacks and maintain public safety.

Some residents also reported disruptions to traffic and daily movement in areas affected by the security operation, as checkpoints and inspections slowed transportation across parts of the city.
