Sunday, May 24, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -Former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has made serious allegations regarding the purpose and management of security checkpoints in Mogadishu, claiming that all checkpoints in the capital are being used for illegal financial collection rather than legitimate security operations.
In remarks addressing the current security situation, Sheikh Sharif alleged that checkpoints in Mogadishu are being used to extort money from local businesses. He further questioned the chain of command overseeing these operations, suggesting that funds collected through such practices are being channeled upward within the state structure.
“These checkpoints are not functioning for security purposes as intended, but are instead being used for illegal money collection from businesses in Mogadishu,” he stated.
He also raised broader concerns about governance and stability in the country, describing the current situation as increasingly chaotic. Sheikh Sharif warned that political tensions are escalating, alleging that preparations are underway for confrontation between the government and opposition groups.
“What is happening in the country is not normal government action. It is becoming chaos. We understand that the leadership is preparing for confrontation with the opposition, and we will not accept that,” he added.
The remarks come amid ongoing political debates and heightened tensions in Somalia’s capital, where security operations and governance issues remain central points of public concern.
Authorities have not yet issued an official response to the statements.
