Wednesday, May 20, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -The Somali Future Council has strongly condemned what it describes as “war threats” issued by the Minister of Defence in the transitional government, directed at opposition figures and members of the Council.

In a statement, the Council said it does not view the remarks as isolated political rhetoric, but rather as part of a broader pattern it links to former President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, alleging ongoing military mobilisation and political pressure against opposition groups under the guise of national security and stability.

Somalia, the statement added, has a “painful history” of threats, repression, and the use of military force for political ends. The Council warned that the former president would bear responsibility for any consequences arising from what it called “any conspiracy or unlawful plan” targeting opposition actors and national stability.

The Council also issued a call to the Somali armed forces, urging them to uphold the constitution and protect civilians, while remaining neutral in political disputes. It further urged security personnel to reject any “illegal orders” from individuals whose constitutional mandate has expired.

In addition, the Council called on the Somali public and the international community to closely monitor what it described as a “serious and dangerous situation” in the country.

Neither the Ministry of Defence nor the federal government has publicly responded to the allegations at the time of publication.
