Sunday , June 14, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -Heavy fighting was reported late Saturday night near Kuntuwaarey district in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region between Al-Shabaab and government forces, according to local sources.
Residents said the clashes erupted on the outskirts of the district and continued for several hours, with both sides exchanging heavy gunfire. Casualties were reported, although the exact number of those killed or wounded remains unclear.
The latest confrontation comes amid a renewed wave of military activity across Lower Shabelle, a region that has long served as one of the main battlegrounds in Somalia’s conflict with Al-Shabaab. Areas including Kuntuwaarey, Buula Mareer, Qoryooley, Awdheegle and Sabiid have repeatedly witnessed military offensives, insurgent attacks and counterinsurgency operations over the years.
Kuntuwaarey and its surrounding areas occupy a strategic position along routes connecting several key towns in Lower Shabelle, making the district an important location for both government forces and Al-Shabaab. Control of these routes has frequently been contested, leading to recurring clashes and security operations.
The district has experienced multiple security incidents in recent years, including armed confrontations, roadside bomb attacks and military operations aimed at disrupting militant activity. Neighboring Buula Mareer has also been the scene of major battles, underscoring the broader security challenges facing the region.
The latest fighting highlights the continuing volatility in Lower Shabelle despite ongoing efforts by Somali authorities to weaken Al-Shabaab’s presence in southern Somalia.
