Saturday, 6 June (Baidoa Online) -At least five people were reportedly killed in early-morning clashes in the Xirsi Lugey area, located between the towns of Guriceel and Balanbale in central Somalia’s Galgaduud region, according to initial local reports.
The fighting, which broke out on Saturday morning, also left several others injured, though the exact number of wounded remains unclear as information from the area is still emerging. Residents said the violence forced parts of the local population to flee their homes amid fears of further escalation.
Preliminary reports indicate that armed groups from the Balanbale and Guriceel areas engaged in clashes in Xirsi Lugey.
The exact cause of the confrontation has not been independently confirmed. However, initial local reporting suggests the violence may be linked to longstanding tensions between armed groups operating in and around the Guriceel–Balanbale corridor, an area that has previously seen sporadic clan-related and militia clashes.
Sources from the area say the confrontation escalated rapidly after the initial attack met armed resistance, turning into a prolonged exchange of fire. The lack of a strong security presence in remote parts of the region is often cited as a contributing factor to the speed at which such incidents intensify.
The Xirsi Lugey corridor lies in a strategically and socially sensitive zone between two major towns in Galgaduud, where local security arrangements are often influenced by clan dynamics and shifting militia control. This has historically made the area vulnerable to sudden outbreaks of violence.
Residents reported that the fighting created panic, prompting families to flee nearby settlements. Such displacement is common in central Somalia during armed clashes, where civilians often move quickly to avoid being caught in crossfire.
The security situation in the area remains fluid, and there has been no official confirmation from regional authorities regarding casualties or the identities of those involved.
Local elders and community leaders are reportedly making efforts to calm tensions and prevent further fighting as security concerns continue.
