Friday , June 19, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -Armed clashes between two rival clans entered a third consecutive day on Friday in Jalalaqsi district of Somalia’s Hiiraan region, raising concerns over civilian safety and the risk of further escalation.

According to local residents, the violence was triggered by a series of alleged sexual violence incidents involving members of the two communities. Tensions reportedly began after a young girl was allegedly raped in the town on Tuesday, sparking outrage and deepening disputes between the rival clans.

On Wednesday, reports emerged that three young men allegedly carried out a retaliatory assault against another girl from the opposing clan, further inflaming tensions and heightening hostility between the communities.

The dispute quickly escalated into armed confrontations, with clashes spreading across several parts of Jalalaqsi district. Residents reported heavy gunfire and the displacement of families seeking safety as fighting continued intermittently throughout the area.

In the latest clashes, at least two civilians were killed and five others injured, according to local residents, as fighting continued in Jalalaqsi district amid ongoing clan violence.

Traditional elders, community leaders, and local authorities are reportedly engaged in mediation efforts aimed at securing an immediate ceasefire and preventing the conflict from spreading to neighboring areas. Despite these efforts, tensions remain high and sporadic fighting has continued in parts of the district

The latest violence highlights the fragile security situation in central Somalia, where local disputes can rapidly evolve into wider clan confrontations, often resulting in loss of life, displacement, and significant humanitarian challenges.

The clashes have drawn attention due to their occurrence in Jalalaqsi, the hometown of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Residents say the fighting has continued for three consecutive days in the heart of the town, despite the presence of local authorities and Djiboutian forces operating in the area under the Hiil Walaal initiative.
