Tuesday , May 19, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -Somali opposition groups and prominent politicians have once again announced major protests against what they described as a “political term extension” allegedly being pursued by Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, following the collapse of recent political talks held in Mogadishu.
In a statement issued by opposition leaders, the groups confirmed that the demonstrations are scheduled to take place on June 4, 2026, urging Somali citizens to participate in large numbers.
The opposition accused the federal government of advancing a political agenda without broad national consensus, stressing the need for an inclusive political process accepted by all stakeholders.
They also emphasized that the planned protests would be peaceful and aimed at expressing public dissatisfaction over the current political direction of the country.
The announcement has further intensified political tensions in Somalia amid growing concerns that the ongoing dispute between the government and opposition could affect national security and the country’s broader political transition.
