Wednesday , June 3, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -Former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has strongly condemned the attack on former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire while he was meeting with traditional elders and community leaders in Mogadishu.
In a statement issued following the incident, Sheikh Sharif accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of pursuing actions that could further escalate political tensions in the country. According to the statement, security forces targeted Khaire during a gathering attended by Ugaas Cabdirisaaq Ugaas Cabdullaahi Ugaas Xaashi Ugaas Faracadde, the traditional leader of the Murusade clan, along with other respected elders and community representatives.
Sheikh Sharif described the operation as part of what he called a broader effort to suppress political opposition and intimidate critics amid the ongoing political standoff in the capital.
“This attack will not stop the demonstrations planned by the people of Mogadishu against injustice, displacement, and the abuse of state power,” Sheikh Sharif said in his statement.
The former president also called on members of Somalia’s security forces to act in accordance with the law and their constitutional responsibilities, urging them not to carry out what he described as unlawful orders that could deepen political divisions and undermine national stability.
His remarks come as tensions continue to rise in Mogadishu following reports of armed clashes and increased security deployments in several parts of the city. Opposition leaders have recently intensified calls for political dialogue and public demonstrations, while government authorities have emphasized the importance of maintaining security and public order.
Political observers warn that continued confrontations between government authorities and opposition leaders could further complicate efforts to maintain stability and advance dialogue on key national issues facing Somalia.
The situation in Mogadishu remains tense, with residents closely monitoring developments amid growing concerns over security and the country's political future.
