Thursday, June 4, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -The Puntland administration has strongly condemned what it described as an armed attack on the residences of former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire in Mogadishu.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, Puntland accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of being behind the operation and held him responsible for any casualties, injuries, or property damage resulting from the clashes.
“Puntland strongly condemns the armed attack carried out against the homes of former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire. Responsibility for these attacks and any losses arising from them rests with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud,” the statement said.
The regional administration expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in Mogadishu and called for restraint from all parties to prevent further escalation. Puntland also urged Somali political leaders to resolve their differences through dialogue rather than violence.
The statement comes amid heightened political tensions in the Somali capital, where fighting has been reported in several areas following disputes between federal authorities and opposition figures. Residents reported heavy gunfire and explosions in parts of the city, raising fears of a wider confrontation.
Puntland is a member of the Somali Future Council, an opposition political alliance that has been critical of the federal government’s handling of political and constitutional issues.
There has been no immediate response from the Federal Government of Somalia regarding Puntland’s allegations. However, the developments are likely to intensify concerns over political stability and security in Mogadishu as tensions between the government and opposition groups continue to rise.
