Thursday , June 18, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -Somalia’s opposition-led Future of Somalia Council convened today to discuss the most suitable electoral framework for the country, as political stakeholders seek consensus on the path toward future elections.
The meeting is being attended by representatives from the Puntland and Jubaland administrations, with discussions focused on developing a unified position regarding proposed changes to the electoral system being advanced by the Federal Government.
According to participants, the talks aim to harmonize views among opposition groups and regional administrations ahead of any potential negotiations on Somalia’s electoral future. Key issues under discussion include the structure of the election model, constitutional considerations, and mechanisms for ensuring broad political consensus.
The opposition has previously prepared several draft proposals outlining different electoral options. However, political leaders now appear to be concentrating on presenting a common stance, backed by coordinated arguments and an agreed framework, in upcoming discussions with federal authorities and other stakeholders.
The meeting comes amid ongoing political debate over Somalia’s electoral process, constitutional reforms, and the broader question of how to establish an inclusive and widely accepted system for future elections.
