Saturday , May 16, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -Somalia’s Council of Ministers is expected to hold an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss the implementation of the constitution, amid growing political uncertainty following the expiry of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s term on 15 May 2026.

The meeting comes as opposition groups intensify pressure on the federal government, declaring that they now regard Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as a “former president” after the end of his constitutional mandate.

In a statement issued on Friday, opposition leaders called for an urgent national consultation to prevent what they described as a potential “power vacuum” in Somalia. They warned that the country has entered a period of heightened political uncertainty, accusing the president of attempting to push ahead with unilateral elections without broad political consensus.

The opposition also rejected the government’s proposed electoral model, describing it as “shameful” and lacking national agreement among key political stakeholders.

The unfolding dispute has raised fresh concerns over Somalia’s political stability at a critical moment for the country. With the opposition rejecting the legitimacy of the current leadership and accusing the government of pursuing unilateral elections, fears are growing that the absence of a broad political agreement could deepen divisions and undermine national institutions. Attention is now focused on the emergency cabinet meeting and whether Somali leaders can reach a consensus capable of preventing further constitutional and political turmoil.
