Saturday , May 16, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has held a meeting at Villa Somalia with Turkey’s Ambassador to Somalia, Alper Aktaş, shortly after inconclusive political talks between Somali leaders at the Xalane compound.
The meeting comes at a time of heightened political tension in Somalia, following disagreements over the electoral process and the end of the current administration’s mandate, which has intensified disputes between the federal government and opposition groups.
According to a statement from the Presidency, discussions focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between Somalia and Turkey, as well as cooperation in security, development, and broader regional issues in the Horn of Africa.
Turkey has remained one of Somalia’s key international partners, playing a significant role in security training, infrastructure development, humanitarian support, and institutional capacity building for the federal government.
The timing of the meeting has drawn political attention, coming just hours after opposition-led talks in Xalane failed to produce a consensus on the country’s political future. Opposition figures have continued to press for inclusive negotiations, warning of a worsening political crisis if disagreements persist.
Analysts say the government is seeking to demonstrate continued international backing amid growing domestic political pressure and a deepening standoff over the electoral framework.
Opposition groups, along with some federal member state actors, have raised concerns over what they describe as external influence in Somalia’s internal political affairs, though no formal response has been issued regarding the latest meeting.
The political impasse continues to raise concerns over stability, as attention now shifts to whether renewed dialogue can be revived or whether the divide between political actors will further widen.
