Thursday , June 18, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -Armed clashes between two rival clans entered a second day on Thursday in Jalalaqsi district of Somalia’s Hiiraan region, raising concerns over civilian safety and the risk of further escalation.
According to local residents, the violence is said to have been triggered by a series of alleged sexual violence incidents involving members of the two clans. Tensions reportedly began after a young girl was allegedly raped in the town on Tuesday, sparking anger and disputes between the communities.
On Wednesday, reports emerged that three young men allegedly carried out a retaliatory assault against another girl from the opposing clan, further inflaming tensions.
The situation quickly deteriorated into full-scale fighting between the two clans, with armed confrontations breaking out across parts of the district. Residents say the clashes have continued intermittently since Wednesday, forcing many civilians to flee their homes amid fears of further violence.
Local sources report that the fighting has resulted in casualties and displacement, although the exact number of those killed or injured has not been independently confirmed.
Traditional elders and local authorities are reportedly working to mediate between the rival sides and prevent the conflict from spreading further. However, tensions remain high as sporadic fighting continues in parts of Jalalaqsi.
The latest violence underscores the fragility of security in parts of central Somalia, where local disputes can quickly escalate into wider clan confrontations.
