Thursday, May 21, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -The Egyptian government has strongly condemned reports regarding the planned opening of a Somaliland embassy in Jerusalem, describing the move as “illegal and provocative” and a direct violation of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
In an official statement issued by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cairo on May 21, 2026, Egypt rejected any unilateral actions aimed at changing the legal and historical status of occupied Jerusalem. Cairo stressed that East Jerusalem remains occupied Palestinian territory under international law since 1967.
The statement further warned that granting legitimacy to any diplomatic representation in Jerusalem undermines international consensus and threatens efforts toward a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. Egypt emphasized that any attempts to alter the status of Jerusalem are “null and void” and carry no legal effect.
At the same time, Egypt reaffirmed its full support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia. Cairo also reiterated its opposition to any unilateral measures that could undermine Somalia’s sovereignty or territorial unity.
The issue has sparked regional political attention amid ongoing debates surrounding Somaliland’s international recognition and diplomatic engagements.
