Thursday , June 18, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and political independence of Somalia following reports concerning the opening of a Somaliland diplomatic mission in Jerusalem.
In a statement issued on Thursday, IGAD said it had taken note of emerging reports regarding the establishment of a Somaliland embassy in Jerusalem and reiterated its longstanding position that the unity and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia must be fully respected.
The regional bloc emphasized that its position is guided by the IGAD Treaty, the Constitutive Act of the African Union, and the Charter of the United Nations, all of which uphold the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states.
IGAD expressed concern over any actions or initiatives that could undermine Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, warning that such developments risk increasing tensions and negatively affecting regional peace, stability, and cooperation.
“The Secretariat expresses concern over any action or initiative that undermines the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” the statement said.
The remarks come amid growing debate over reports of deepening ties between Somaliland and Israel, a development that has generated political reactions across Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa region.
While Somaliland has for decades sought international recognition as an independent state, the Federal Government of Somalia maintains that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Somali Republic and opposes any diplomatic engagements that could be interpreted as recognition of Somaliland’s independence.
IGAD’s statement signals regional concern over developments that could further complicate political relations in the Horn of Africa, while underscoring continued support for Somalia’s internationally recognized borders and sovereignty.
