The African Union Commission has expressed deep concern over the failure of high-level talks held in Mogadishu between Somalia’s Federal Government and the Somali Salvation Forum opposition coalition to reach an agreement.

In a statement, the African Union warned Somali political stakeholders against maintaining hardline positions that could further widen political divisions. The Commission urged all parties to urgently return to meaningful dialogue based on compromise and respect for the constitutional order, including adherence to constitutional term limits.

The AU emphasized the importance of preserving political stability and national unity during what it described as a sensitive transitional period for Somalia.

The Commission also reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities in Somalia, including the establishment and implementation of the new African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

According to the statement, the AU will continue working closely with the United Nations and international partners to support efforts aimed at resolving the ongoing political dispute and maintaining peace and security in the country.

The warning comes amid rising political tensions in Somalia following the breakdown of negotiations between the Federal Government and opposition leaders over key electoral and constitutional issues.
