Monday, May 18, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -Somalia is facing renewed political uncertainty following high-level consultations held in the Xalane compound between international envoys and members of the opposition-aligned “Mustaqbal” political bloc, as efforts to reach a final agreement on the country’s electoral process and transitional governance ended without a conclusive deal.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, international representatives acknowledged that there is growing agreement on two critical issues, but stressed that significant political differences remain unresolved.
The envoys reportedly stated that there is a shared understanding that the current federal government has exceeded its constitutional mandate and that Somalia is effectively operating under a transitional political period. They emphasized the need for an inclusive and balanced approach to governance during this phase, warning against unilateral decision-making by any single political actor.
They also reiterated the importance of reaching a broad-based agreement on the country’s electoral framework, noting that no single stakeholder should control the process or determine the structure of upcoming elections independently. Instead, they called for a negotiated settlement involving all key political actors.
The international community further expressed concern over the possibility of political tensions escalating into confrontation. They urged opposition groups to maintain calm and remain engaged in dialogue, warning that abandoning negotiations could worsen the already fragile situation.
Meanwhile, diplomatic sources indicated that consultations are ongoing with both opposition figures and federal government representatives in an effort to bridge remaining differences and prevent a deeper political crisis.
Efforts continue to secure a lasting agreement on the management of the transition period and Somalia’s electoral roadmap, amid growing concerns about stability and governance in the capital and beyond.
