Saturday , May 16, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -The United Nations has warned that Somalia has entered a sensitive political transition and electoral contest phase, urging urgent political consensus to manage the evolving situation.
The UN Special Representative for Somalia (UNTMIS) called on the Federal Government to bring all relevant stakeholders to the negotiating table in order to build broad-based agreement on the country’s electoral framework and process.
In a statement, the UN expressed concern over the lack of progress in recent political talks held in the Xalane compound, which ended without any meaningful breakthrough on key disputed issues.
“It is regrettable that once again the dialogue has concluded without resolving the critical outstanding differences,” the statement said.
The UN further stressed that Somalia’s current political climate requires a strategic shift to prevent continued stalemate, warning that prolonged political divisions could negatively impact security, humanitarian operations, and stability across the country.
It also cautioned that persistent political disagreements may undermine ongoing peacebuilding efforts and hinder the delivery of humanitarian assistance at a time when many communities remain vulnerable.
The appeal comes as Somalia continues to face deep political divisions over the electoral process and broader governance arrangements, with no comprehensive agreement yet reached among key political actors.
