Friday, May 29, 2026 (Baidoa Online) -Political and security tensions around Baidoa intensified on Friday after traditional elder Malaaq Ali Mohamed Nur “Shanla Gaab” and fighters under his command joined forces loyal to former Southwest State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed “Laftagareen” on the outskirts of the city.
Earlier in the day, additional troops who reportedly defected from Wanlaweyn district in the Lower Shabelle region also arrived near Baidoa and officially aligned themselves with Laftagareen’s forces stationed around the city.
Local sources say the newly arrived forces are heavily armed, with increased military movements and mobilization now being reported along frontline positions surrounding Baidoa.
The latest defections and reinforcements are raising fears that the situation in Baidoa could slide into serious instability and possible armed confrontation if a political solution to the ongoing dispute is not reached soon.
Residents in the city are increasingly concerned about the growing tensions and the potential impact on security and daily life across Baydhabo and nearby areas.
